Legacy & obsolete equipment

Obsolete does not automatically mean replace.

Older circuit breakers and electrical equipment require a technical assessment of condition, maintainability, spare parts availability, and possible next steps.

When does legacy become a technical issue?

A technical assessment is typically relevant when:

Manufacturer support decreases
Spare parts become harder to source
Equipment has been in service for a long time
Maintenance history is incomplete
Faults or failures reoccur
Protection technology becomes outdated
Repair feasibility is uncertain
Past modifications are poorly documented

Central decision route

Depending on the technical situation, the appropriate outcome is not always a complete replacement. An asset does not need to go through all these steps linearly.

Maintain

When technical condition and availability permit, maintenance can keep the existing equipment operational.

Repair

A specific technical defect may potentially be targeted for repair.

Spare Parts

Availability and correct identification of components can determine whether continued operation is possible.

Retrofit

When original equipment or parts are no longer practically available, a technically suitable retrofit can be investigated.

Replace

When preservation, repair, or retrofit is technically or practically unsuitable, replacement may be the logical next step.

First, know what is actually installed

With older installations, available information is not always complete. To determine the right solution, the actual configuration must first be identified using, for example:

Manufacturer and type
Configuration and nameplate data
Nominal ratings
Protection relay or trip unit
Control voltage
Installed coils
Auxiliary contacts
Mechanical configuration
Available schematics
Previous modifications
Available documentation

First understand the existing configuration, then determine the solution.

Technical condition before conclusion

Age alone is insufficient to draw a technical conclusion. Depending on the asset, the assessment may consist of:

Visual inspection
Mechanical condition
Functional operation
Relevant measurements
Condition of components
Protection
Available history
Objective assessment of technical condition → Testing & Diagnostics

From unknown history to a technical record

Even when an asset has been in service for years before Sin-Ergy encounters it, a technical history can be built starting from the first assessment. Existing type data, available documentation, photos, measurement results, findings, completed work, spare parts, and later modifications can be brought together in the Asset Passport for that specific asset.

Missing historical information is not reconstructed or invented, but available legacy information can be added. This creates a traceable technical record from the first assessment onward, which subsequent inspections, repairs, retrofit, or replacement decisions can build upon in the same asset context.
